Sober Living: A Great Transition

Sober living is a great place to meet other people in recovery and to transition back in to society. There are many options available for people when it comes to having a treatment plan and sober living is one of the best parts of it. Most people in recovery use sober living as a way to learn to live life on life’s terms and get to know other people in recovery. The recovering alcoholic and addict finally get a chance go to outside twelve step meetings on their own and also eventually can have assistance with finding a new job, finding out what the next step is and doing it all safe and sane!

Most sober livings usually work in a very simple manner. All the member of the house will have some rules that they must follow to keep the integrity and also some small house chore. The rules will usually include a curfew and a mandatory wake-up time. As a good rule of thumb getting out of bed and starting the day with a sense of purpose is very important for someone in recovery. Morning meditation is frequently held at wake-up time where all the members of the group can read from one of the many recovery oriented books and have a chance to share about anything they have on their mind.

It is strongly suggested and most likely required in most sober livings for someone who is new in recovery to get a sponsor from their twelve-step program. A sponsor is someone who has been through the twelve steps and has the experience that they can share with someone who is new to help them stay sober. It is important to have an active role in your recovery and to make sure when your in sober living that you make it to a meeting every day. A great method I learned when I was newly sober was to attend 90 meetings in 90 days and you will then have a solid foundation to work from in your sobriety.

Being in a sober living is a beautiful time in recovery and I have great memories of my stay in sober living. Some of my favorite things about it living in a recovery house was bonding with the other people in the house; whether it be listening to music, cooking dinner, playing table tennis or grilling on the barbeque, it was all a great time. There were tons of other activities the house offered during the week including:

  • Attending movies with member of the house

  • Going out to the flea markets on Sundays for shopping

  • Heading to a meetings early and getting coffee with everyone

  • Going on hikes and rock climbing on the different trails in Los Angeles

And many other things that makes the things done in recovery and for sobriety worth it. Some may think that these things don’t sound fun at all, but after it’s over some of the fondest memories were built from doing these house activities. If you or someone you know if struggling with staying sober or is currently abusing drugs, Connections in Recovery can place you or your loved one in a friendly, safe environment in which this person has the opportunity to get and stay sober.
